Full
detailed itinerary Day 1 We will meet at the airport in
Bucharest and will continue with an airplane up north, to Baia Mare. We will cross
the mountains to a small village in the heart of Maramures where will enjoy a
traditional dinner and accommodation with local families. Day
2 Starting from the village, today we ascend to the renowned Creasta Cocosului
ridge. Being the last remains of an old volcanic crater, the ridge is protected
today as a geological reservation and offers splendid views of the entire Maramures
area. On our way to the summit we will cross beautiful mountain meadows and pass
by traditional sheepfolds that are used here late in spring till the first snow
of that year or even later. Day 3 &
4 Todays hike takes us through traditional
villages and wonderful hills. Starting from the village and enjoying the beautiful
scenery we will descend to a village where youll visit a few artisans and
our first Maramures distillery. We will continue hiking to Budesti village where
well have an overnight stop with local families. While in Budesti well
visit the Unesco wooden church and admire the architecture of the village that
boasts the highest number of wooden houses in Maramures. We
will continue to hike the next day over impressive and remote hills, populated
only by lonely shepherds and their flock. We will descend near the wonderful wooden
church from Poienile Izei and go further to Botiza village for overnight lodging
with local families. Day 5 This day
we will take a break from hiking, when we will head north to the Romanian/Ukrainian
border to visit one of the most famous cemeteries in the world, Merry Cemetery,
renowned for the blue color and the stories carved on the crosses. On the way
to the cemetery we will stop in Sighetul Marmatiei and explore the town that used
to be the centre of the region in old medieval times and that now holds one of
the most important museums in Romania filled with memories of the former communist
era. We will drive back to Botiza for accommodation. Day
6 Today we will start from the centre of the village and we will have our last
hike over the hills of Maramures to the village that hosts the oldest wooden church
in the country. We will cross amazing meadows and meet people working in the fields,
who are using the same traditional tools like their parents and grandparents. Day
7 Early in the morning well be taken
by car to Viseu de Sus to experience probably the last steam train that is still
being used today for logging up in the mountains. We will enjoy a few hours ride
with this amazing steam train that seems to be taken out of our children's fairytales.
Late in the afternoon we will drive back to Baia Mare for the overnight train
to Bucharest. Day 8 We will drive
to the airport and say goodbye. |
