Trails carved in Wood

The beauties of Maramures are many - and best discovered on foot. The walks in the hills in the northern part of the country will let you discover the real soul of the region, the beauty of the mountainous landscape and the amazing humour of the people who seem to have emerged from century old legends.

Full detailed itinerary

Day 1
We will meet at the airport in Bucharest and will continue with an airplane up north, to Baia Mare. We will cross the mountains to a small village in the heart of Maramures where will enjoy a traditional dinner and accommodation with local families.

Day 2
Starting from the village, today we ascend to the renowned Creasta Cocosului ridge. Being the last remains of an old volcanic crater, the ridge is protected today as a geological reservation and offers splendid views of the entire Maramures area. On our way to the summit we will cross beautiful mountain meadows and pass by traditional sheepfolds that are used here late in spring till the first snow of that year or even later.

Day 3 & 4
Today’s hike takes us through traditional villages and wonderful hills. Starting from the village and enjoying the beautiful scenery we will descend to a village where you’ll visit a few artisans and our first Maramures distillery. We will continue hiking to Budesti village where we’ll have an overnight stop with local families. While in Budesti we’ll visit the Unesco wooden church and admire the architecture of the village that boasts the highest number of wooden houses in Maramures.

We will continue to hike the next day over impressive and remote hills, populated only by lonely shepherds and their flock. We will descend near the wonderful wooden church from Poienile Izei and go further to Botiza village for overnight lodging with local families.

Day 5
This day we will take a break from hiking, when we will head north to the Romanian/Ukrainian border to visit one of the most famous cemeteries in the world, Merry Cemetery, renowned for the blue color and the stories carved on the crosses. On the way to the cemetery we will stop in Sighetul Marmatiei and explore the town that used to be the centre of the region in old medieval times and that now holds one of the most important museums in Romania filled with memories of the former communist era. We will drive back to Botiza for accommodation.

Day 6
Today we will start from the centre of the village and we will have our last hike over the hills of Maramures to the village that hosts the oldest wooden church in the country. We will cross amazing meadows and meet people working in the fields, who are using the same traditional tools like their parents and grandparents.

Day 7
Early in the morning we’ll be taken by car to Viseu de Sus to experience probably the last steam train that is still being used today for logging up in the mountains. We will enjoy a few hours ride with this amazing steam train that seems to be taken out of our children's fairytales. Late in the afternoon we will drive back to Baia Mare for the overnight train to Bucharest.

Day 8
We will drive to the airport and say goodbye.
