Full detailed itinerary

Day 1
We will meet at Bucharest airport from where we will a car will drive us north to Brasov where our trip will start. Brasov is an old medieval town, built by German settlers in Transylvania at the beginning of the 12th century. The ingenious position between the protective mountains made it one of the most important Saxon towns in Transylvania, surviving all attacks coming from outside. We will walk around the old citadel with its beautiful main square and the most important landmark, the Black Church.

Day 2
In the surroundings of Brasov, at the foothills of the Carpathians, lie some of the most beautiful Saxon villages (Unesco heritage sites), renowned for the spectacular fortified churches and for the traditional Saxon architecture. Today we’ll visit two of them, Harman and Prejmer, on our way to the Szekely Land, on the eastern border of Transylvania. Here we will cross old villages that belonged to rich noble Hungarian families in past times. We’ll stop in one of them for overnight staying in an old beautiful mansion, renovated today and transformed into a guesthouse.

Day 3
This is a day of exploring the Szekely Land, crossing traditional Hungarian villages. We head to one of the most beautiful churches in the area, at Ghelinta, that still keeps amazing 14th century frescoes on its interior walls. We will head north through the two ranges of the Eastern Carpathians and we will stop in the small village of Lazarea, an old noble residence of one of the most renowned Hungarian families in Transylvania.

Day 4,5 & 6
Today we will cross the Carpathians to Bucovina, the land of the painted monasteries. These three days will be dedicated to the exploration of this north-eastern part of the country with its beautiful painted monasteries, Voronet, Sucevita, Humor, Moldovita, with its old tradition in painting Eastern eggs, with its wonderful music and its impressive scenery that protected this part of the country for centuries, like a fortress. In the last day we will cross again the Carpathians, this time to go to Maramures, renowned as the land of the wood and plum brandy.

Day 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11
Maramures lies in the northern part of Romania, surrounded by mountains that many times seemed impossible to conquer. The deep forests that protected the area for centuries are also the ones that gave birth to the traditions and crafts in the area. The amazing natural landscape is completed by the joyful people that live in this land according to ancient laws that still survive the modern times. We will take time to explore the traditional villages in Maramures, to meet the craftsmen and local people, to taste the famous plum brandy, horinca, and to adventure on the surrounding hills and mountains. In order to make our experience even more extraordinary we will stay only with local families in the village.

Day 12
Our trip leaves the northern part of the country and heads again to the Saxon area of Transylvania. On our way there we will cross another beautiful Hungarian village, not far away from Cluj town, where the old traditional costumes are still alive as also the traditional customs of weaving hats.

Day 13 & 14
These two days we will be wandering through mysterious Saxon villages where time forgot to pass and little seemed changed since medieval times. Founded at the beginning of the 13th century, the majority of them still have amazing fortified churches which will tell us stories about the big Saxon community that once inhabited this part of Europe. Through our journey there we’ll visit one of the most impressive fortified churches in Transylvania at Biertan and we’ll admire the wonderful 14th century frescoes that still adorn the interior walls of the Saxon church in Malancrav. We’ll also have a stop in the wonderfully kept Saxon citadel in Sighisoara, declared a Unesco heritage site and we’ll find out more about the Mihai Eminescu Trust that works mainly in this area, by visiting the unofficial headquarter in Viscri.

Day 15
Today we return to Bucharest for the flight back home and to say goodbye.
