Saxon Crossroads

In the heart of Romania there is a place that for centuries was a country within a country. The Saxon arrived, settled and built outstanding lives in this remote corner of Europe in times when chaos and despair seemed one with the world. Their strong will and faith in themselves merged in some amazing traces that they left to this world. Enjoy an outstanding trip in time through the remote villages of these extraordinary German settlers, right in the heart of Transylvania.

Full detailed itinerary

Day 1
We gather at Bucharest airport we will drive north to Zarnesti, at the foothills of Piatra Craiului mountains which will be our base for the night.

Day 2 & 3
Today our biking tour starts by crossing the villages at the foothills of the highest Romanian mountains, which are the entrance to the Saxon Land of Transylvania. Overnight we will stay in a traditional Saxon village with family guesthouses. The next day we will continue biking to one of the most famous Saxon villages, Viscri. Listed on the Unesco Heritage List, the village delights the eye with the most amazingly kept traditional architecture, due especially to the Mihai Eminescu Trust that started to work here in the late 1990s. We will spend the night in one of the traditional houses which was restored with the help of the trust.

Day 4
The amazing hills that surround the Saxon villages are renowned for the extraordinary richness of wildflowers and also as a perfect place for meeting the shepherds that work in the area. Today we will take a horse and cart over the hills and we’ll experience the sheepfold life and products of one of the many that are spread on the hills. We’ll continue our ride to the next Saxon village to visit the fortified church there. A car will pick us up for the ride to our next destination, beautiful medieval Sighisoara town.

Day 5, 6 & 7
These three days we’ll be biking through remote Saxon villages that didn’t change much with time. Being away from the main road we will have the opportunity to experience the traditional way of life, to stay in family homes and to taste the great meals prepared by gifted women in the villages. Some of the villages that we’ll cross became famous due to their amazing fortified churches that survived for centuries to the numerous attacks, or bad weather for that matter... We’ll admire the wonderfully kept frescoes at Malancrav and we’ll visit the biggest of the fortified churches in Transylvania, also a Unesco Heritage Site, Biertan. Our final destination is the capital of the Saxon Land, Sibiu that was declared in 2007, due to its amazingly well kept historic centre, the European Cultural Capital.

Day 8
Today we’ll return to Bucharest and say goodbye.
