Roaming the Carpathians

Transylvania, who did not hear stories of its rugged sharp mountain peeks and dark forests, teeming with wolves and brown bears? True, the Carpathian mountain range boasts the highest population densities of large carnivores in Europe. Fortunately, any dark gothic horror stories are quite overrated, so lets take these myths head on and conquer the Carpatians on foot.

Full detailed itinerary

Day 1
We will meet today at the airport in Bucharest and we’ll drive to the foothills of Piatra Craiului Mountains, a national park in the Carpathians renown both for its pristine nature and amazing landscape as for the Large Carnivore Project that was developed in this area for the past 10 years.

Day 2
This day will be spent in Piatra Craiului National Park hiking to Curmatura Cabin where we will stay overnight. The hike today will give us many opportunities to admire the limestone ridge of the mountain that dominates the region from over 2200 meter high (7200 feet) and to look for rare species of flowers like the edelweiss and Garofita Pietrei Craiului, an endemism found nowhere else in the world.

Day 3
Today we are descending from the main ridge of the mountain, following old shepherd paths but we’ll remain inside the National Park. Crossing dense beech and pine forests we will head to the mountain villages that are part of the park.

Day 4
Two big mountain ranges surround the town of Brasov: Bucegi and Piatra Craiului. Today we’ll start our descend to the main valley that separates the two massives. Our hike will takes us to one of the most famous landmarks of Romania, Bran Castle, renowned for its rugged look and subsequent non-existent connection with Prince Vlad the Impaler. We’ll continue up the valley near the castle to a small traditional guesthouse where we will stay for the night.

Day 5 & 6
We hike on moderate trails in the Bucegi mountains along a dramatic scenic route with glorious views of Piatra Craiului and the peaks of Bucegi, crossing alpine meadows and beautiful remote passes. We will stay at the lively mountain lodge Malaiesti. At 1720 meter up (5643 feet) the lodge offers spectacular views of the northern walls of the massif. The next day hike will take us down to Busteni, on Prahova Valley. We’ll head to Brasov for overnight staying.

Day 7
We take a day to enjoy Brasov’s medieval surroundings. We’ll spent our last day visiting the old citadel of the town with its amazing main square and beautiful architecture. We will also visit two amazing fortified Saxon churches built in the early 13th century around Brasov.

Day 8
We depart today to Bucharest and say goodbye.
